Thank you for signing up to be a volunteer at New Haven Reads!

For the safety of our students, we require two background checks for all potential tutors over the age of 18: a criminal background check and a DCF background check. New Haven Reads kindly requests all volunteers to consider covering the cost of their criminal background check. One background check costs the same as two student workbooks.

  • Criminal Background Check ($26): This is a criminal background check and it requires some basic personal information which will be collected via an encrypted email sent to you directly from CheckR. You are not obliged to pay for your background check. If you prefer not to pay for the background check, New Haven Reads will cover the cost.
  • Department of Children and Families (DCF) Background check (Free): Volunteers 18 years and older must complete a DCF release form. New Haven Reads will email you a copy of your report as soon as it is received from DCF. There is no cost for this background check.
